Donna Marie's Story

My name is Donna, but most of the time I like to be called Donna Marie. I am 16 years old, and a current junior in high school. I am part German, Indian, and Hispanic. I identify myself as being gay (lesbian). I live with my parents in a quiet neighborhood and very protective environment.

I am a member of a few clubs within my school. I am a member of S. E. E. D. (Students who are educated upon equality/diversity). I am also a member in the Art & Poetry Society. Along with the last club I am in Regaler. In Regaler we publish two books a year with students' poetry and artwork. Another activity that means a lot to me is the local marching band. I am a color guard member of three years, that's almost six seasons.

I am currently looking into becoming a psychologist and I hope to major in psychology. This experience of being a peer educator lets me have a chance to go out and help others. This is my dream.

My coming out story? I really was scared to come out to my parents. When I went to visit my father up north, I told him because I knew I wouldn't see him much. Yet, when I came to my mother, whom I live with now, I froze. I called my counselor for help. I called upon my friends. I set a date to meet my mother in school.

She came into the school with me. We sat down in the guidance office. The left the room so that my mother and I could speak in private. When I told my mom, she began to cry. Not out of pain, but because I finally told her. Apparently she already knew. But she wanted me to tell her. She loves me, but it's not a happy story. My father -- well he and I don't speak much. He is going through denial. But someday I know he will learn. Lately he has tried to reconnect with me, and I believe he is starting to understand me. Slowly but surely.

I have come out to my whole school already. Sometimes it may be hard, but sometimes it's just the right thing to do. In my case, it set me free.
